Twisting Poses

I remember the first time that I did the Marichyasana a few years ago…I felt as if my internal organs are all squeezed so tightly together that they would be squashed at any second. And at the same time I was also wondering if I did it correctly…. After I releases the pose, my body surprisingly felt so refreshed and alive(especially after a night of few cocktails) that I wanted to do it again, and again and again.

Although I didn’t know what are the benefits of doing the twisting poses, I only knew that I felt great after the practice. And so I continued without any question.

Indian yoga master B.K.S lyengar describes twists as a “squeeze-and-soak” action: the organs are compressed during a twist, pushing out blood filled with metabolic by-products and toxins. When we release the twist, fresh blood flows in, carrying oxygen and the building blocks for tissue healing.

There’s a theory that says that once the body is cleansed and healthy, then the energy that would normally go toward dealing with disease or discomfort can then go toward high endeavors, such as deepening the inner life. Therefore a sluggish digestive system is incompatible with good health, and twists are a great way to stimulate the digestive system and nudge the intestines.

Benefits of Twisting Poses:

a) relief of back pain-twisting yoga poses help release pressure in the lower back by restoring circulation, increasing flexibility and correcting posture. These postures rejuvenate the spinal column, and this makes the daily spinal twists an excellent way to relieve back pain.

b) cleanse and detoxify the body- twisting massages inner muscles and organs, essentially wringing out toxins while bringing in a rush of fresh oxygen and nutrients. Twisting also flushes out impurities from inner tissues and help organs perform their functions properly.

c) tone abdominal muscles- twisting incorporate all abdominal muscles. By practicing the twisting poses regularly, a practitioner will notice a shift in abdomen size.

After I have learnt the benefits of the twisting poses, the knowledge has pushed me to a higher level of practicing the poses.
