Sciatic and Yoga

Sciatic – “Pain radiating along the sciatic nerve, which runs down one or both legs from the lower back”.

My grandmother suffers from Sciatic and she has for a long time. Even though she has been to the doctors for treatment, medicine, cortisone shots, and has even been given many pamphlets on stretches in order to release the pain. However, she continues to suffer from the sciatic every now and then. I have also had my own experiences with sciatic and having leg pain in general. Which is why I understand how important it will be to continue to my practice through out my life. The problem with sciatic is that it hurts so badly that the person who is suffering doesn’t want to move, let alone do yoga exercises. But, that’s what actually helps the most. I could be wrong but I tend to think some elderly people may think of yoga as a waste of time or that it’s too late to start. Which is unfortunate because a couple of poses a day, taught and assisted by a yoga instructor would benefit them tremendously. I’m able to relate to the consistent extruciating pain that comes with sciatic, so I would enjoy sharing the benefits of what yoga can do for those that suffer.
