Feeling unwell? Fingers to the rescue! Practicing hand yoga is known to relieve health problems. It’s also known as hand gestures called “Mudras” in Sanskrit that is often used in meditation or pranayama breathing to channel the flow of energy within the body by your hands.
Everything in nature including our body is made up of 5 elements – Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. When any of the elements are lacking, it can cause imbalanced mind and create heath problems.
In Yoga, I have learnt to use Mudra to balance my energy within and to achieve wellbeing. As we are using our hands, our 5 fingers represent each of the 5 elements.
- Thumb: Fire (Agni)
- Index finger: Air (Vayu)
- Middle finger: Space (Akasha)
- Ring finger: Earth (Prithvi)
- Small finger: Water (Jala)
Joining the fingers in different gestures enables you to influence how much of the relevant element is in your body by increasing or weakening it, so as to tune the emotional, mental, and physical characteristics that are associated with each of the five elements. You can, therefore, use mudras to activate the five elements.
How do we do it?
It’s easy! Mudras can bedone in any pose – sitting, walking, talking but for better concentration, the best way is to do it while seated in a comfortable position, along with pranayama breathing. I would suggest to do set aside 10 – 15 minutes, three times daily, whenever you feel the need to. Mudra is recommended to be done with both hands for balance,as the right hand will affect the left side of the body and vice versa.
Some of my favourite Mudras are:
- Chin/Gyan Mudra: Mudra of Knowledge
Steps: Touch thumb tip with index finger tip and relax the remaining fingers, keeping it causally straight. Palm can be facing up or down. Suggest to face palms up while doing in the day and palms down at night.
Benefits: Helps to calm the mind, improves mood & memory, cure insomnia, relief stress & depression.
Elements: Space + Air
2. Surya Mudra: Sun/Fire Mudra
Steps: Bend your ring finger and use your thumb to hold it down. Keep the rest of the fingers straight.
Benefits: Improves digestion, increase metabolism, helps in weight loss, improves eyesight, reduce cholesterol levels.
Elements: Space + Water.
3.Buddhi/Varuna Mudra: Seal of Mental Clarity
Steps: Touch the tip of the thumb and little finger and rest of the three fingers remain extended.
Benefits: Improves communication, helps in skin, blood, indigestion, bladder & kidneys problems.
Elements: Space + Earth
4) Prana Mudra: The Spirit of Life
Steps: Bend the ring and little finger, touching the tips of both to the tip of your thumb, keeping the other two fingers straight.
Benefits: Helps to build self-confidence, reduce anxiety, improve body strength & immunity, removes fatigue, improves all types of eye problems, helps in diabetes too.
Elements: Space + Water
Isn’t that amazing? You would never see your hands and fingers in the same light again. Through my own practice, I have personally experienced their efficiency in providing health, empowerment and serenity. They are great for our wellbeing, so don’t be afraid to try them out!
