Savasana

I typed and backspaced plenty times trying to find a good title to this post. As you can tell, I settled with the simple ‘Savasana’ because, just like the pose itself, I wanted the title to remain seemingly simple and straightforward…

Yet Savasana, or Corpse Pose, may be one of the most difficult yoga postures out there! Imagine yourself in another non-yoga life. Someone comes up to you and says, “Hey! Have you ever tried lying down and spreading out limbs out slightly in a certain manner before focusing your attention on each part of your body for 15 minutes? It’s life-changing!” What do you do?

Chances are, you would have walked away, wondering why the world was so full of people who seem to have lost their minds. But if you think about it, when do we give ourselves time to breathe in this dog eat dog world?

In Savasana, you do more than just relax your body. You allow every single fibre of your being the sensation of release from any tension or pain. It is the equivalent of a spa day for your ligaments, tendons, muscles – you name it. You relax, replenish, rejuvenate.

What can 15 minutes of Savasana do, you say? Apart from calming the brain (because we all need that no matter what line of work we’re in!), it relieves stress and reduces the risk of insomnia, headaches, and general fatigue. With proper relaxing techniques, you find yourself with less aches and pain, no matter how rigorous your practice was.

So do yourself a favour. The next time you practice, allow yourself those 15 minutes and give your body permission to relax. Go deep into that rare yet extraordinarily simple peace.

Ohm Shanti Shanti Shanti…
