Prenatal Yoga and Natural Birth

When I discovered that I was pregnant, I already knew that I wanted to have a drug free birth outside of a hospital setting. I had a strong belief in the amazing strength and power of the female body to bring forth life without medical intervention. I was certainly aware that in some situations medical intervention was necessary, but I wanted to do everything in my power to be fully present for the birth of my child. At the time I was practicing yoga twice a week and continued to practice until my 38th week. I joined a studio which offered prenatal yoga classes and went to two to three classes per week. In addition, I practiced a method called Calm Birth which involves the practice of opening, womb breathing and giving and receiving. I arranged to give birth at a birth center with the assistance of a midwife and a doula.

I had an AMAZING pregnancy! I felt an incredible connection with the life growing inside of me. I believe that yoga and the method of breathing that I practiced helped prepare me for birth in a way that honored the deepest innate ability of my female body. During pregnancy, I was in constant awe of my changing body and the life that I could feel moving within me. It was the most magical time of my life!

I did not find out if I was having a boy or a girl. Therefore, many of my friends and family members had taken bets on the gender of my child and also the day he or she would be born. I told them all that I would have a girl and that she would come on her due date.

I started feeling the pangs of labor late at night on the day before I was due. I called my midwife and my doula and went to the birth center. My labor was painful and intense. I continued to breath, I used certain asanas to help turn my baby and help guide her down the birth canal. The process of birth was so powerful! I felt everything that my body was telling me to do and I did it…..and then my gorgeous daughter arrived on her due date!
