Coconut water is an incredibly popular thirst-quencher. Weekly observations at local supermarkets, while stocking up the drink for YTT, saw cartons of coconut water flying off the shelves. What is the hype with coconut water? Let’s look at some of its benefits:
• Coconut water is about 95% water, which makes it a great hydration drink as it can hydrate your body as well as plain water.
• Coconut water is low in calories compared with any sports or soft drink, which makes it a good replacement beverage post sport when used like this.
• Coconut water contains a very good amount of the electrolyte, potassium, the vital mineral in your body. Enough potassium intake helps the nervous system to function properly. One serving of coconut water provides about 13% of your daily potassium requirement.
• Coconut water contains magnesium. Inadequate levels of magnesium can cause low energy levels.
• Coconut water contains cytokinins. Research has shown that cytokinins have anti-ageing, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-blood clot formation effects.
• Coconut water contains a lot of water-soluble antioxidants, such as vitamin C, which prevent damage to our bodies caused by free radicals.
• Coconut water is composed of many naturally occurring bioactive enzymes, which help in digestion and metabolism.
With so many benefits in one beverage, what is there not to love about coconut water? Enjoy your coconut water by itself, as base in protein shakes or in any creative ways you can think of. Fellow yogis are loving it so much they can’t stop.
Enjoy the goodness! Namaste.
